A lipoma is a non-cancerous, soft, and typically slow-growing fatty tumor that forms just beneath the skin. While most lipomas are harmless and painless, they can sometimes cause discomfort or affect your appearance. At Skinsol Dermatology, we provide expert care and treatment for lipomas, ensuring your comfort and confidence with every step.
What is a Lipoma?
A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth of fatty tissue that develops just beneath the skin. Lipomas are typically soft, movable, and round in shape. They vary in size from small to large and can appear on any part of the body, although they are most commonly found on the shoulders, back, and thighs. While lipomas are usually painless, they can become tender or uncomfortable if they press on nerves or other tissues.
Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause of lipomas is not fully understood, but several factors can contribute to their development:
Genetics: Lipomas tend to run in families, suggesting a genetic link. Some inherited conditions, such as familial multiple lipomatosis, can cause multiple lipomas to form.
Age: Lipomas are more common in adults between the ages of 40 and 60.
Trauma: In some cases, an injury or trauma to the skin may trigger the formation of a lipoma.
Obesity: Being overweight may increase the likelihood of developing lipomas, although they can occur in individuals of any weight.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing a lipoma typically involves a physical examination by a dermatologist. In some cases, imaging tests such as an ultrasound or MRI may be recommended to determine the size, depth, and location of the lipoma. A biopsy may also be performed if the lipoma appears unusual or if there is a concern about its nature.
Treatment Options
While lipomas are generally harmless, treatment may be necessary if they cause discomfort or affect your appearance. At Skinsol Dermatology, we offer the following treatment options for lipomas:
Surgical removal: The most common treatment for lipomas is surgical excision, where the lipoma is completely removed under local anesthesia. This is often the most effective option for large or painful lipomas.
Liposuction: For smaller lipomas, liposuction may be an option. This minimally invasive procedure uses a needle to remove the fatty tissue, leaving a smaller scar.
Steroid injections: In some cases, a corticosteroid injection can shrink the lipoma. However, this method may not completely eliminate the growth.
Prevention
There is no known way to prevent lipomas from forming. However, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding trauma to the skin may reduce the likelihood of developing them. If you have a family history of lipomas or a condition like familial multiple lipomatosis, regular checkups with your dermatologist are recommended to monitor any new or growing lipomas.
